An exotic herbivore reinforces competition between exotic and native plants

چکیده
Despite increasing evidence that herbivore-mediated indirect effects play a major role in plant competition, it is unclear how and when they contribute to invasiveness. The outcomes of are primarily dependent on the environment have complex interactions with direct between plants. We evaluated Solidago altissima (Asteraceae) other co-occurring native Asteraceae species at multiple sites range [the United States (US)] an introduced (Japan) using common garden experiments. examined effect S. herbivore damage, above-ground vegetative reproductive traits different densities herbivore, lace bug, Corythucha marmorata, which US Japan. observed increased bug herbivory plants grown Japan but decreased US. did not find consistent aboveground production either ranges. Flower because both competition herbivory. Direct apparent via interacted produce strong negative only Synthesis. findings imply evolutionary history local jointly affect effects, large shaping pattern competition. Another implication our results exotic herbivores may reinforce under high density environments.

Herbivore Preference for Native vs. Exotic Plants: Generalist Herbivores from Multiple Continents Prefer Exotic Plants That Are Evolutionarily Naïve
Enemy release and biotic resistance are competing, but not mutually exclusive, hypotheses addressing the success or failure of non-native plants entering a new region. Enemy release predicts that exotic plants become invasive by escaping their co-adapted herbivores and by being unrecognized or unpalatable to native herbivores that have not been selected to consume them. In contrast, biotic resi...
متن کاملExotic Weed Invasion Increases the Susceptibility of Native Plants to Attack by a Biocontrol Herbivore
Landscape change has great, yet infrequently measured, potential to influence the susceptibility of natural systems to invasive species impacts. We quantified attack by an invasive biological control weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus) on native thistles in relation to two types of landscape change: agricultural intensification and invasion by an exotic thistle, Carduus nutans, the original target of ...
متن کاملSediment Type Affects Competition between a Native and an Exotic Species in Coastal China
Different types of sediments in salt marsh have different physical and chemical characters. Thus sediment type plays a role in plant competition and growth in salt marsh ecosystems. Spartina anglica populations have been increasingly confined to upper elevation gradients of clay, and the niche sediment has changed. Because the niches of S. anglica and the native species Scirpus triqueter overla...
متن کاملA new perspective on trait differences between native and invasive exotic plants.
Functional differences between native and exotic species potentially constitute one factor responsible for plant invasion. Differences in trait values between native and exotic invasive species, however, should not be considered fixed and may depend on the context of the comparison. Furthermore, the magnitude of difference between native and exotic species necessary to trigger invasion is unkno...
